LED work light design has intrinsic challenges. Mostly to do with its multi role capability and rugged construction. More to these, we had constraints imposed by the business in terms of using some existing components. These challenges feeds into our excitement.
Our product design team studied the client inputs and set on to development of the concepts.
After doing a quick research, the team realised that the primary form of the product will be dictated by the battery pack and what seem to left was to address the functional details.
Initial Ideation
At this point, the client intervention was required to proceed further as we discovered that there could be three distinct approaches to do this LED work light design.
Quick paper mockups and simulations gave the team, a lot of insights.
Client decided to go with direction 2. The LED work light design team, throttled in full speed.
ID team diverged further to develop variation around direction 2, conforming to the approved construction details.
Once again the team got back to the client with its recommendations. Concept 4 is recommended as it has an aggressive stance and appeared very dynamic.
After rigorous discussion with the client, the team focussed on refinement of the design.
One more time, client is called in to evaluate the design. Client provides tighter refinement opportunities.
Our engineering team does the final refinement before we proceed for the Mark1 validation.
A large variety of CMF was worked out as the client did not have a brand colour or identity.
Finally, it was time for the design validation followed by tooling and mass production.
Team put on to a brand new project !
Few, weeks later the client discovers more opportunities with the same battery pack. The same team is put work on an exploratory project. The design team starts with ideation sketches.
Quick mock up was done to evaluate the ergonomic and various user interaction of the design.
Product development engineers took charge to develop CAD models to evaluate various functionalities of the handle.
Refinement was done to get the finer details more precise.
Final design was ready for prototyping and further tooling activities.
This exercise resulted in a completely different product and the team is all happy to achieve this.
