Design Thinking Workshops for Business Incubators

Yet again, this blog is about one of the many design thinking workshops for business incubators.

Technology Business Incubator (TBI-KU) at the Kannur University (Kerala, India) today is a thriving centre for local startups. This is functioning under the Department of Management Studies at the beautiful campus located at Thavakkara Kannur, Kerala.

Department handholds the startups by providing all sorts of boosters so that the young entrepreneurs can accelerate faster and establish their business in the marketplace. Along with the Kannur University Innovation and Incubation Foundation, they provide subsidised co-working spaces that is state-of-art matching quality and ambience of modern IT companies. Apart from the physical setup, they also provide industry connects as well as bring in domain experts from various walk of business to benefit the startups.

Shanavas M S (Design Director) at Teqzo Consulting was invited as a domain expert in design thinking practice to conduct the design thinking workshops for business incubator. Objective behind such a program was to inspire the entrepreneurs about design thinking and its ability to bring innovation and disruptions in their startup journey.

In this short (3 hr) workshop, Mr Shanavas emphasised that the design thinking as a practice originated in the design and technology sector to help technology companies come out with cutting edge innovations and help them stay competitive in the industry. However, he presented a simplified version of the design thinking practice that can be applied by almost anyone to stay ahead of the rest, whether they practice law or music and the likes.

In a nutshell, the summary of the design thinking workshops for business incubators is as follows.

  • Defining the problem statement (using 5 Why’s to get to the root cause).
  • Setting up a goal (a goal that is reasonably beyond ones reach)
  • Triggering “potentials” before triggering solutions. (major difference between brainstorming)
  • Diverging into large number of ideas (avoiding critical judgement as in normal thinking)
  • Converge by making few of the ideas work (expert judgement is utilised here)

Apart from entrepreneurs who were incubating in the centre, undergraduate and postgraduate students from various departments also attended and benefitted from this workshop.

Participants were facilitated by registrar is Dr Joby K. Jose.

Vice Chancellor is Dr S. Bijoy Nandan, inspired the gathering with his experience and expertise. Dr. U. Faisal (Professor) and his team, Department of Management Studies was instrumental in organising this successful event.
